Nike Rolls Out its First Social Loyalty Program via Facebook in Hong Kong

PumaPulse Curated By ZenithOptimedia, The ROI Agency Find out more at http://puma-pulse.blogspot.com

Typically, using hashtags on Facebook is redundant. But for Nike Hong Kong, you can show off how sporty you are by posting on the social network sporting activities you’ve completed, earn points, and get rewarded.
Instead of a viral video traveling around the world inspiring fans, Nike Hong Kong knows the way to get youths in the city to participate and engage with its Make It Count campaign is by taking the gamification approach leveraging Facebook’s social graph.
Targeting youngsters aged 15 to 25, they first need to visit Nike Hong Kong’s campaign site to register via their Facebook logins.
The system will analyze the user’s account to determine how sporty they are and award basic points.
To earn more points, participants have to complete a number of “missions,” ranging from sporting activities such as running, skateboarding, football to basketball as well as other outdoor activities like walking a pet, taking a picture of their sports gear, or attending a Latin dance class.
After completing the missions, participants would need to share on Facebook either through a status update, photo upload, or location check-in using the #makeitcount hashtag to accumulate points.
The accumulated points will be used to redeem “rewards” for Nike products or join sporting events. For instance, with 7,000 points, a user can exchange for a gym sack but will need 22,000 points to attend Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco in October.
“It is the first loyalty program that leveraged on the organic function of social media,” said Jade Lau, brand communications manager for Nike Hong Kong.
She explained after users joined the campaign, they could tell their friends about the completed activities via the social platform and the system would automatically reward them with points that could be exchanged for rewards and special sporting events.
The campaign, supported by its digital agency Razorfish in Hong Kong, aims to educate users on the concept of “make it count” and get them to add the campaign hashtag on social media. The campaign will begin on Facebook initially, with plans to extend to China’s Weibo and photo sharing social network Instagram in the coming weeks.
Make It Count rolled out in March and has been gaining momentum since, with more than 20,000 users signed up and over 70,000 missions completed.
According to Nike, no traditional media was used in this campaign. Instead it is run mainly from its campaign site and Facebook, supported by major local media portals such as Yahoo, Sina, Apple Daily, On.cc, and vertical sites.
However, a recent mission under the football category is aligned with an outdoor event that featured a digital installation in Langham Place shopping mall. The mission merged with another campaign called My Time Is Now, which ran concurrently. Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNIky-Mb3m4
Because Make It Count Hong Kong relies heavily on Facebook’s API, one of the key challenges was to integrate with the social platform seamlessly as many unexpected issues occurred such as errors during deployment that were outside of the agency’s control.
Razorfish’s advice if you plan to do a similar campaign of this scale leveraging Facebook or other social media platforms: sufficient testing time is critical.
Make It Count in Hong Kong will run till the end of this year.

3 Great Interactive Marketing Campaigns with RFID and Facebook

PumaPulse Curated By ZenithOptimedia, The ROI Agency Find out more at http://puma-pulse.blogspot.com

Zentih Comment:
I'm sure some of you will have seen the campaigns last year using RFID. Below are 3 campaigns that used this technology. It's a great way to amplify your event which is what you've been looking to do. Have PUMA looked at using this technology with any campaigns? Could definitely be worth seeing how this could work with the Social campaign later in the year.

I am a big admirer of new technology and its application in marketing, especially when the result is a novel and remarkable user experience. The use of Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology and Facebook in interactive marketing campaigns is a combination that creates such an effect.
Recently, I have been researching a bit more about this technology and the possibilities it can bring to the field of marketing and communication. And I managed to find a few really interesting cases which I think are worth sharing.
Below you will see three campaigns from the automotive, drinks and holiday industries.
Renault
The first one is a case by Renault. Earlier in the year, Renault participated in the Amsterdam auto show in The Netherlands. Visitors to their stand were able to interact in a quite unusual way and to connect their online and offline worlds. And all of this with just a plastic card…well not exactly, as you can see from this video:
Coca-Cola
The second case features Coca Cola and their Summer Village initiative organised in Israel. The organisers were able to find a great and entertaining way to let the teenage visitors to share their experience in the real world with their friends online. And all of that with the help of a bracelet…and a chip, and Facebook of course. Here’s the video:
Ushuaia Beach Hotel
The third case comes from a very warm and sunny place – Ibiza. The Mediterranean island becomes the party centre of Europe for three months every year. As a result of that local clubs are faced with the big challenge of attracting the attention of the visitors. If you have been to Ibiza you can’t have missed all the people inviting you to parties in random clubs and all the other crazy ways they’ve come up with over the years to attract your attention. Well, this year, the Ushuaia beach hotel and club found a great way to stand out from the crowd. Again with the help of a few simple tools. Take a look:

All these cases and the speed at which agencies are adopting the innovation bring me a sense of encouragement that very exciting times are ahead for all of us involved in digital communications. I’m really looking forward to more creative uses of this technology by marketing and communication professionals!

ASICS Expands "Support Your Marathoner" for 2011 ING New York City Marathon

Social Media Program Inspires Runners With Personal In-Race Videos

ASICS America Corporation, official sponsor of the ING New York City Marathon, is expanding its award-winning "Support Your Marathoner" program for the 2011 race. This year, Support Your Marathoner will leverage the power of social media to deliver additional moments of inspiration to more runners than ever before, ensuring that no marathoner has to finish the race alone.

Recently named the "Most Innovative Communication Strategy" of the year by Promo Magazine, the inaugural Support Your Marathoner program in 2010 gained international attention by allowing friends and family to send pictures, texts, and video messages of support to the marathon runner of their choice. Utilizing innovative technology, motivational messages were delivered to the right runners, at the right time, as they ran past giant video screens placed along the course. More than 7,000 runners from 17 countries utilized the program and created their own virtual cheering sections.

ASICS is bringing back the Support Your Marathoner activation with significant additions. This year, the enhanced program will incorporate a new website ( www.supportyourmarathoner.com ) allowing the runners to use their own Facebook communities to ask for messages of support. Every time a support message is uploaded, the runner's entire Facebook community is alerted, and encouraged to upload more messages. The Support Your Marathoner website will also give runners their own personalized support gallery of messages, pictures and videos to have after the race is done.

This year, ASICS will also debut the "Share Your Glory" Facebook application. The "app" lets runners update their social media community on their race progress in real-time by pre-writing three Facebook and Twitter posts which are then sent out as the marathoners pass each of three areas at the 9-, 13-, and 22-mile marks.

"ASICS is committed to giving marathon runners everything they need to compete at their best, including motivation and inspiration during the race," says ASICS' Vice President of Marketing Erik Forsell. "Last year, we were blown away by the reaction to Support Your Marathoner. We saw runners who were digging deep for the final miles look up and break into tears when they saw their kids and their friends urging them on. We instantly knew we had to do more."

The Support Your Marathoner website ( www.supportyourmarathoner.com ) goes live October 14, and will be supported by email blasts from the New York Road Runners and ASICS' own growing social media community. Fans can follow the tweets and create their own with #ASICSrunsNYC.

Anima Sana In Corpore Sano, meaning "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body," is an old Latin phrase from which ASICS is derived and the fundamental platform on which the brand still stands. The company was founded more than 60 years ago by Kihachiro Onitsuka and is now a leading designer and manufacturer of running shoes, as well as, other athletic footwear, apparel and accessories.
